Common Questions About Hearing Aid Tubings & Earhooks
How often should hearing aid tubing be replaced?
Audiologists recommend replacing hearing aid tubing every 4–6 months. PVC acoustic tubes naturally harden, yellow, and lose flexibility over time — hardened tubing can crack, pull the hearing aid off the ear, or degrade sound quality. Slim/thin tubes for RIC/RITE receivers should be replaced every 3–4 months. If you notice the tube feels stiff, looks cloudy/yellow, or the hearing aid sounds muffled, it's time for a tube replacement.
What's the difference between standard tubing and thin/slim tubing?
Standard PVC tubing (#13) is thicker — used on traditional BTE hearing aids where the tube connects the earhook to a custom earmold. Thin/slim tubes are narrower and pre-curved — used on open-fit BTE and RIC/RITE hearing aids where the tube connects directly to a soft dome in the ear canal. Thin tubes are more discreet but have a shorter lifespan. The two are not interchangeable — tube type is determined by your hearing aid model.
What is a damped earhook and when is it needed?
A damped earhook contains an integrated acoustic resistor (filter) that reduces specific frequency peaks — typically in the 1–3 kHz range — to smooth the hearing aid's frequency response and control feedback. Damping values of 7dB, 9dB, or 12dB are prescribed by the audiologist based on the patient's hearing loss and the hearing aid's gain settings. Damped earhooks are most commonly used in power BTE fittings for severe-to-profound hearing loss. An undamped earhook provides no acoustic filtering — full sound pass-through.
Are earhooks interchangeable between hearing aid brands?
No — hearing aid earhooks are brand-specific and must match the BTE housing's attachment point. Phonak, Oticon, ReSound, Signia, Starkey, and Widex each use different mounting geometries and pin configurations. However, within a parent company (e.g., Oticon/Bernafon/Philips, all owned by Demant), earhooks may be physically interchangeable — always verify with the product code. Pediatric vs. adult earhooks — what's the difference?
Pediatric earhooks have a tighter, smaller-radius curvature to fit the shorter distance behind a child's ear. They're also available in metal (ReSound, Phonak) for extra durability given children's active lifestyles. Adult standard earhooks have a more open, larger-radius curve. Pediatric ear hooks can also be used for adults with very small or low-set ears. Color options (pink, blue, green, yellow) are most common in the pediatric range for kid-friendly appeal.
